2008 GAPA awards recognize service and leadership

The 2008 Georgia Association of Physician Assistants awards were recently held, recognizing the leaders and rising stars of GAPA who show high professional standards and dedication to the association, along with consistently striving to further the PA profession.

Physician Assistant of the Year – Darrel Clabaugh, MHS, PA-C
The recipient of the Physician Assistant of the Year award must display proven leadership throughout the year, as well as be a mentor to others throughout the state. Clabaugh has shown an incredible amount of dedication to GAPA, currently serving as a board member at large for the association. Clabaugh, of Macon, felt incredibly honored to be named the PA of the Year as deemed by GAPA.

Distinguished Service Award – Devon Jackoniski, PA-C
The Distinguished Service Award is given to the GAPA member who has gave much time and effort to further GAPA´s endeavors. Jackoniski of Atlanta has shown throughout the year her service and dedication to the association. However, Jackoniski insists her award should be shared. "The award was granted to acknowledge the effort put forth in our public education campaign, which was fostered by O´Neill Communications. I am only one of many whom devoted time, energy and determination in our attempts to better GAPA."

Humanitarian of the Year – Scott Dickerson, PA-C
The recipient of the Humanitarian of the Year award is a PA that has shown an outstanding commitment to human rights, and is based on work done outside of the PA´s primary employment. Dickerson is no exception, being active in both breast cancer research and working with people who have substance abuse issues. "The PA profession is a blessed career," Dickerson said. "We play a critical role in the care of a patient [and are] an integral and essential provider in quality health care." Dickerson is based in Stockbridge.

Rural PA of the Year – Rooster Cogburn, PA-C
The Rural PA of the Year award is awarded every year to a PA who has provided accessible, quality health care in a rural community of fewer than 10,000 in population. Cogburn said that he experienced shock when he learned he was the recipient of this honor, but ultimately is incredibly grateful for the opportunities that GAPA has provided him. Cogburn is a former GAPA president, and is currently in Gray.

Physician/PA Partnership Award – Mike Tremmel, PA-C, BS & James Malcolm, MD
This award is given to a team that has displayed evidence of collaboration and a unique relationship of trust, collegiality and mutual respect. Malcolm and Tremmel have shown a true partnership within Malcolm´s practice based in Marietta. "This is truly an honor for us, our patients, our spine team and Pinnacle Orthopaedics," said Tremmel. "I'm grateful that GAPA has affirmed our commitment to work as a team in our attempts to reach out to others." Tremmel is from Acworth.

Physician of the Year – Theresa Berry, MD, M.Ed
The Physician of the Year is looked at as a mentor and teacher, and has also facilitated the practice of PAs throughout the state. Berry, who runs a family practice in Dunwoody, a suburb of Atlanta, has demonstrated a significant partnership with PAs, thus being named the Physician of the Year.

Circle of Honor – Marshall Sinback, PA-C<
The Circle of Honor is a distinguished award given to someone with a proven record of involvement and achievement with GAPA. The recipient is considered a pioneer in the GAPA organization by improving service to the public, serving as a role model and mentor to PA students and representing GAPA in a positive manner. Sinback, a former GAPA president, was awarded with this honor for 2008. He currently resides in Winchester, Virginia.
