Love Your Heart This February
February is associated with hearts. You can thank Valentine's Day and the American Heart Organization for bringing more awareness to hearth health among the American people – we all know that we need to watch our weight, what we eat, how often we exercise and keep tabs on our stress levels. So we know what to do … but how many of us actually know the inner workings of one of our most important muscles – our heart?
"A key step to heart health is actually understanding how your heart works," explained Devon Jackoniski, GAPA education chair. "Most people don't even realize that the heart is a muscle, and just like every other muscle in the body, it requires conditioning to stay strong."
The heart's priority is to pump blood (which transports oxygen) throughout the body, keeping organs healthy. To accomplish this, it is comprised of four chambers, including the right atrium, the left atrium, the right ventricle and the left ventricle.
Blood pumps through the four chambers, aided by four ventricles. "Blood flows through the heart, into the lungs for oxygen, through the body transporting that oxygen, and then back to the heart," explained Jackoniski. It does this through the help of the blood transportation system – arteries and veins. "That is why it's so important to follow a healthy lifestyle – watch what you eat, exercise regularly, and get in the habit of visiting your health care provider for an annual check-up of your blood pressure, cholesterol levels and other risk factors, particularly if you have a family history of heart attack, stroke, or heart disease."
It is the mission of the Georgia Association of Physician Assistants to promote high quality, cost-effective, accessible health care as part of a physician-directed PA/physician team in Georgia.
