Cervical Cancer Risk Reduction According to the National Cervical Cancer Coalition, nearly 30% of the women who are diagnosed with cervical cancer disease in the United States die each year as a result of the disease. However, woman who are regularly screened significantly reduce their chances of developing cervical cancer by 70%. Physician Assistants of Georgia urge all women to reduce their risk of developing cervical cancer through yearly examinations (pap smears), for women who are 18 or older or when they begin having sexual relations. Human Papillomavirus (HPV) The most common cause of cervical cancer is Human Papillomavirus, better known as HPV. Recently, the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) approved the first vaccine that prevents cervical cancer caused by HPV for use by females 9 - 26 years of age.
